THIRTY!

I recently had a birthday...the big 3-0.

It was a fabulous day that included Chinese food, Harry Potter, new accessories, polka dot Keds, Breyer's mint chocolate chip ice cream (the best ice cream in the land), a photo book of my favorite toddler, a long drive through the valley, an art museum, my cute little fam, and chocolate cupcakes.  I loved it.

Some people freak out over turning 30, but I say bring it on.  I don't wish I could go back to the past...I've already done all that!  I'm looking forward to the future with faith and hope and excitement.  I know there will be hard times, but there will be wonderful times, too.

And you can't feel old wearing polka dotted shoes.
(Seriously.  It's not possible.)

Here's to the beginning of another decade of adventures!

...that shall include countless creative endeavors, I'm sure. :)

DIY photo keychain...

Sometimes it's hard to come up with gifts for people who have everything they could want or need, so this Mother's Day I gave the grandmas a little version of their grandson...a cute photo keychain.  (Don't worry - I made one for myself, too!)  This would be a fun, simple gift that you can easily customize for anyone.

You'll need:
a small wooden shape
a drill
craft paint
scrapbook paper
xacto knife
a photo (small enough to fit on your shape)
mod podge & mod podge dimensional magic
jump ring, chain, and split ring

Start by drilling a small hole at the top of your shape and painting the edges the color of your choice.  (My shape is 1 1/4" x 1" rectangle, but you could use any shape--circle, star, heart--whatever.)

Next, cut a little piece of scrapbook paper slightly larger than your shape.  This will serve as the back of your keychain.  (You could also put names, dates, etc. on the back if you want.)  Spread a thin layer of mod podge on the wood surface and on the back of the paper.  Smooth paper in place and let dry.

Turn wood shape over and trim off excess paper...

then spread another thin coat of mod podge on top and allow to dry.  Use a pin or toothpick to poke out the hole you drilled.

Now finish off the back with a coat of dimensional magic and let it set up according to package directions.  (If you've never worked with it before see this past tutorial of mine for some tips!)  This will create a shiny finished look.

Once the back is dry, you can just repeat the process for the photo on the front.  I just printed mine on photo paper on my home printer so I could get it exactly the size I wanted.

Mod podge it on and trim it up...

Add another coat of podge, poke your hole...

...and do a layer of dimensional magic.

When it's dry, add your jump ring, chain, and a split ring (all found in the craft store jewelry making section) and that's a wrap!

You could use any kind of image--a favorite vacation pic, your kiddos or grandkids or significant other, pets, a little collage.  Endless possibilites.

striped artist quote printable...

I stumbled across this quote a few years ago, and I've loved it ever since...

"An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one."
-- Charles Horton Cooley

Some projects may not work out as planned, but that doesn't make one a failure.  Being a creative person is a success in itself.

I turned these inspiring words into a fun striped printable to add to the craft room gallery wall I'm working on...and I thought I'd share the love.

I've created 8x10 images in 4 colorways, all available for download.

P.S.  Thanks to those of you who sent me kind birthday wishes yesterday!
(Here's a blurry 10 o'clock at night birthday picture...)

I enjoyed some lovely gifts, a shrimp & steak dinner, surprise movie tickets to a chick flick, and way too many fancy cupcakes from a local bakery.

I may or may not have eaten one for breakfast...

28...

Today is my birthday.
Normally I love birthdays, but I'm having some mixed feelings this year.

I thought I'd be in a different place in life long before 28...
...but I'm trying not to think about that.

Instead I will think about spending a little birthday money at Target. :)

Maxi dresses in bold colors?  Yes, please.

Plus, my hubby has surprise birthday plans for me tonight.  I do love surprises!

two-seven...

today is my 27th birthday.

that number is getting a little high, i think...
but 50 years from now i'm sure i'll be reminiscing about when i was young and 27.  so i guess i'm not that old after all. :)

since good ol' george washington and i share a birthday, president's day always falls just before my birthday.  i love it--my hubby gets the day off of work, so we get to spend it making all of my birthday wishes come true.  yesterday those wishes involved the art museum, italian food, shopping, and the movie theater.  it was fantastic.

however, since yesterday wasn't actually my birthday--
"no presents until tomorrow."  (dang!)

brandon couldn't help himself, though, and snuck one in a little early.

that man certainly knows the way to my heart!

25

yes. as of yesterday, i am the newest member of the quarter-of-a-century club. 1/4 of my life is over! however, i'm looking forward to the remaining 3/4. it's gonna be HUGE. :)

i know i just did this at the start of the new year, but i like to reflect on life in between each birthday i celebrate. and SO many big events have happened to me since my last birthday...
  • i went through the temple and received my endowment.
  • i went on an amazing 10-day trip with my teacher friends--puerto rico and a carribean cruise. best vacation EVER.
  • i fell in love!
  • i brought this love-o'-mine home to meet my family...and he told my dad he wanted to marry me.
  • i got engaged!
  • i went to san francisco for the first time and met my fabulous in-laws.
  • i started my THIRD year of teaching. i feel like i was just in college yesterday...
  • i moved out of the yellow brick house. (miss you, ybh girls!)
  • i got married. holy cow!
  • i honeymooned at an ocean-view condo in san deigo.
  • i swam with a dolphin.
  • i went to the body worlds exhibit.
  • i got to go to the utah symphony--twice!
  • i spent christmas at my home...just me and the hubby for our first christmas together.
  • i was called to the relief society presidency in my new married ward. (very different from singles ward RS, let me tell you...)
  • i got a new car.
  • i explored the SLC library with bran--which i've always wanted to do.
  • i got hit by a bus. (new car is now less new.)
  • i went house hunting for the first time.
  • i got to go to the draper temple open house.
sheesh. that's a lot of life squeezed into one measly little year. but i have a feeling that 25 is going to be even BIGGER.

just you wait.
